Squalene is a naturally occurring substance that is most commonly found in olive oil. Praised for its anti-cancer and protective effects, it can also be helpful in Parkinson's disease to lower cholesterol levels and act as an antioxidant.

Squalene is a molecule produced by humans, animals and plants. It is a precursor to cholesterol and all steroid hormones. Squalene is incredibly beneficial for the body:

  these include potential anticancer effects,
protective and moisturizing role for the skin,
  antioxidant activity,
and squalene may even improve the immune response to vaccines,
a precursor for the synthesis of cholesterol and steroid hormones such as testosterone and estrogen,
able to inhibit HMG-CoA reductases that block ras pathways involved in cancer cell growth,
increases the production of collagen (type 1 procollagen),
reduces damage from UV rays and protects against wrinkles,
reduces double-stranded breaks in DNA, reducing DNA damage,
  increases body detoxification,
increases fat metabolism by activating PPARα,
  protects against oxidative damage,
  increases healthy cholesterol levels.

Squalene is rich in olive oil and shark liver oil.
Shark liver oil is the richest source of squalene. Squalene levels are very high in shark fat tissue.

1) Squalene protects the skin.

Squalene is found in the outermost layer of the skin and plays a role in UV protection.
Without enough squalene, UV rays can cause skin inflammation.
With regular intake of squalene for 90 days, redness decreases and collagen activity increases, wrinkles decrease.
Squalene is useful in treating skin conditions such as psoriasis, dermatitis, and acne.

2) Squalene is an anti-cancer agent.

Doxorubicin is a common chemotherapy drug. Squalene increases the accumulation of doxorubicin within the tumor, targeting only the treatment of cancer cells. Prolongs the action of doxorubicin in the body.
Squalene improves the access of tumors to therapy. It does this by altering the network of blood vessels that supply the tumor.
In cells, squalene combined with chemotherapy (cisplatin) is 10 times better at killing cancer cells than chemotherapy alone.
Squalene enhances the antitumor properties of the chemotherapeutic drug doxorubicin in cells.

3) Squalene reduces the side effects of chemotherapy.

Cisplatin is a chemotherapy drug that often causes side effects. The squalene-cisplatin combination prevents the formation of tumors without any signs of toxic side effects.
Squalene reduces DNA damage caused by the chemotherapy drug doxorubicin, especially when squalene is taken after doxorubicin. Increases the tolerance of doxorubicin by 5 times. It also prevents cardiac toxicity, which is a common side effect of doxorubicin treatment.

4) Squalene is an antioxidant.

In skin cells, squalene scavenges free radicals and reduces damage caused by oxidative stress.
The combination of squalene and other antioxidants (astaxanthin and fucoxanthin / fucoxanthinol) reduces the damaging effects of fats.

5) Squalene improves mitochondrial function.

Improves mitochondrial function in the liver by increasing the activity of several energy pathways (Krebs cycle and oxidative phosphorylation).
Squalene also supports the body's detoxification processes.

6) Squalene helps with fatty liver.

Squalene may help fatty liver diseases by enhancing fat metabolism (activates PPARα).
Squalene synthase is an enzyme that produces squalene. People who do not synthesize squalene (squalene synthase deficiency) show signs of liver dysfunction and abnormal enlargement of the liver (due to increased production of farnesol).

7) Squalene protects dopamine neurons in Parkinson's disease.

Squalene, taken for 7 days, maintains dopamine levels in the brain (striatum). It reduces oxidative damage and prevents the toxicity of a chemical that destroys dopamine neurons (6-OHDA).
Squalene supplementation improves motility and prevents dopamine loss and cell death.

8) Squalene can improve response to vaccines.

In cells, squalene is used as an additive in vaccines because it enhances the immune response (activating antigen-presenting cells and T cells).
Supplementing the diet with shark liver oil containing 3.6 grams of squalene increased the number of white blood cells that fight bacteria.

9) Squalene and Cholesterol.

Squalene is a precursor to cholesterol. Squalene lowers cholesterol levels in liver cells.
